Dr. Jörg Schäfer, is Professor at the University of Bordeaux (UMR CNRS 5805 EPOC). He has obtained his PhD in Environmental Geochemistry in 1998 at the University Karlsruhe, Germany and his habilitation (HDR) in Environmental Biogeochemistry in 2006 at the University of Bordeaux, France.
His research interests focus on trace metal/metalloid geochemistry in aquatic systems: sources, speciation, reactivity, fluxes, bioaccumulation, biotransformation, with a special emphasis on emerging metallic contaminants, mostly belonging to the group of Technology-Critical Elements (TCEs). He has been coordinator and/or co-leader of diverse national and international research projects (ANR, EU Marie Curie, EU FP7 OCEAN, ANR Investissements d’Avenir, ANR
International GIS Ecobag) and several industrial collaborative projects (e.g. SCP-Science, Thermo-Fisher, Suez). He is a nominated Management Committee member and work group co-leader of the COST action TD1407 on TCEs. He has co-authored 86 publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, h-index = 29; 12 publications (2 invited) without peer-review, >260 international conferences; >60 invited conferences (keynote speaker, programme restitutions, workshops, seminaries, etc.); 45 scientific/technical reports. Professor Schäfer is an Associate Editor of the international peer-reviewed journal ‘Chemie der Erde – Geochemistry’ and has served/serves as Guest Editor of 4 Special Issues in international peer-reviewed journals (Marine Chemistry, The Science of the Total Environment). He has (co-) supervised 17 PhD theses (14 finished, 3 ongoing), 8 post-docs, 27 Master II and 23 Master I students; 35 student fellows (e.g. ERASMUS, IUP, international, etc.) and is the French coordinator of the ERASMUS MUNDUS Master in Marine Environment and Resources (MER labelled ERASMUS MUNDUS 2013-2018, and ERASMUS+, 2018-2022). He has (co-)organised/chaired several national and international conferences, conference sessions, and two international Training/Summer Schools (Spain, Israel).
