A quest for new modes of governance: the role of global partnerships - Pieter LEROY

Last update Wednesday 23 April 2014

Sustainability is a complex issue that, on the one hand, challenges existing (governmental) modes of governance while on the other provoking the emergence of new ones. Among the latter is a wide variety of multi-stakeholders’ initiatives, labeled dialogues, round tables, partnerships etc., either at local and at global level. These represent a quest for new institutional arrangements. Research questions on these recent phenomena comprehend the understanding of their emergence, their search for legitimacy, their functioning as arenas for deliberative politics, their functioning as mechanisms for private standardization, their effectiveness. etc.
